What can Add page numbers do?

  • Runs in your browser: your files never leave your device.
  • Nine positions on the page, and facing-page layout for double-sided printing.
  • Formats: 1, Page 1, Page 1 of 9, 1 / 9, roman numerals, or your own with {n} and {p}.
  • Start at any number and skip the first page.
  • Font, size and colour; optional white background box behind the number.
  • Continue numbering across several files; increase margins if numbers collide with content.

Where can I put page numbers on a PDF?

You can put page numbers in any of nine positions, such as bottom centre or top right. With facing pages on, numbers move to the outer edge of left and right pages, which suits double-sided printing.

Which page number formats can I use?

The ready-made formats are 1, Page 1, Page 1 of 9, 1 / 9 and roman numerals. For anything else, write your own with {n} for the page number and {p} for the total, for example Page {n} of {p}. Set the font, size and colour to match your document.

Can I skip pages or continue numbering across files?

Yes, you can skip the first page, start at any number and continue numbering across several files. If a number clashes with content, add a white background box or increase the margins.

For legal documents that need a prefix and many digits, use Bates numbering. To add a title or date next to the number, use Header & footer. This tool runs on your device.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add page numbers to a PDF?

Add the PDF, choose a position such as bottom centre and a format such as Page 1 of 9, then select Add page numbers. The live preview shows the result before you download it.

How do I start page numbering on page 2?

Turn on skip first page so the cover has no number, and set the start number so page 2 shows as 1 if you want.

Can I use a custom format like Page 1 of 10?

Yes. Write your own format with {n} for the page number and {p} for the total, for example Page {n} of {p}.

What if the page number overlaps text?

Add a white background box behind the number, or increase the margins to make room.
