How do I find and replace text in a PDF?

To find and replace text in a PDF, type the word or phrase, type its replacement and choose Replace or Replace all. Matches are listed with their page number, so you can check them before you change anything. Match case and Whole word make the search stricter.

Is the text really changed, or just covered?

The text is really changed: each matching line is rewritten in the PDF, not hidden under a box. To hide words without changing them, use Whiteout PDF; to remove sensitive text for good, use Redact PDF.

This page opens the PDFDaily editor with the right tool already selected, and every other editing tool in Edit PDF is one click away.

Frequently asked questions

How do I replace text in a PDF?

Open the PDF in Find and replace, type the word to find and the new text, then select Replace for the first match or Replace all for every one. Select Save to download the changed PDF.

Does replacing text keep the original font?

Yes, when the document's font contains the letters you type. If a letter is missing, a very similar open font is used, such as Carlito for Calibri.

Can I match case or whole words only?

Yes. Turn on Match case or Whole word to narrow the search. The panel shows how many matches there are and on which pages.

Can I change link addresses too?

Yes. Turn on Include link URLs and matching web addresses in links are replaced as well.

Can I find and replace text in a scanned PDF?

No. A scanned page is a picture of text, so there is no text to find and replace.

Is find and replace free and private?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no daily limit, and the PDF never leaves your device.
