Split PDF by text starts a new file each time the text in an area you mark changes, such as an invoice number, and names each file after that text.

How to split a PDF by text in 3 steps

  1. 1

Choose your PDF file, then draw a box where the changing text appears on a page.

  2. 2

Optionally enter the text it should start with, so only matching values count.

  3. 3

Select Split PDF and download the ZIP or the individual files.

What can Split PDF by text do?

  • Draw a box around the text that changes, such as an invoice or order number.
  • A new file starts each time the text in the box changes.
  • Files are named by the text, for example the invoice number.
  • Optional starts-with filter to ignore text that does not match.
  • Runs on our servers; files are deleted after 2 hours.
  • Free for files up to 200 MB, within the free daily server task quota.

How do I split a PDF by text?

Split PDF by text reads the text inside a box you draw and starts a new file whenever that text changes. The tool checks the box on every page, so pages with the same value stay together and multi-page invoices remain whole.

What is splitting by text good for?

Splitting by text separates a batch PDF in which each document carries an identifier in the same spot, such as a month of invoices, payslips, statements or delivery notes. If each one shows a unique value in the same place, you can split on it.

How are the split files named?

Each file name includes the text found in the box, so you get names that carry the invoice number, such as INV-10452, instead of a part number. Use the starts-with option when other numbers could appear in the same spot.

Scanned pages need OCR PDF first, because the tool reads text rather than pictures. Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 2 hours. For other split modes, see Split PDF.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a PDF by invoice number?

Draw a box around the invoice number on one page and select Split PDF. A new file starts each time the number in that box changes, and each file name includes it.

Can I split a PDF by its content?

Yes, by text that appears in the same place on each page, such as an invoice, order or account number. Pages with the same value stay together in one file.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

Only after OCR. The text in the box must be real text in the PDF, so run OCR PDF first, then split.

What does the starts-with option do?

Only text that begins with your value counts as a split point. For example, enter INV- to ignore other numbers in the same spot.

How are the files named?

The default pattern is [BASENAME]-[TEXT], where [TEXT] is the value found in the box. You can edit the pattern.

Is my PDF uploaded when I split it by text?

Yes. This mode runs on our servers. Files are encrypted in transit and deleted after 2 hours.
